BIM, BENTLEY, AUTODESK, CONSTRUCTWARE AND BUZZSAW
Bentley and Autodesk are sharing API’s to allow their software to import each other’s formats with minimal loss of data and Autodesk in particular is moving towards a standard format for all of it’s applications allowing for greater interoperability between their different products (e.g. Revit, AutoCAD, etc.)
AutoDesk and Bentley have most solutions and are acquiring supporting tools
Autodesk’s purchase of ConstructWare and ownership of BuzzSaw are interesting but not providing much direction yet.
BIM usage is highest among architects but not necessarily highest value-add back to owner.
Manufacturers have begun figuring out how their data can be layered in.
Green and LEED certification certainly creates strong case for some BIM tools (sustainable materials).
We are early in the evolution…invest carefully but invest
Large industrial and institutional owners are pushing
Standards have yet to be worked out
Companies working with BIM in some way have had positive experiences and reporting ability to tackle larger more complex work.
          One man’s definition –
Software systems and technology that use a comprehensive and common data model of a structure to facilitate quicker, more accurate, less costly, and more efficient design, estimating, procurement, building and maintenance.
          Building lifecycle
Application developers working with a common data set
          Role of the designer?
        Conflict resolution or
enhancement?
        Risk transfer? Item

        Source (vendor)
        Watts
        Power consumption
